John

1.
A son of Zebedee ( Mt.4:21); (younger?) brother of James who was murdered by Herod Agrippa I. ( Acts 12:1-2)
2.
Mother, Salome, possible sister to Mary, mother of Jesus.
(Compare Mt.27:56; Mk.15:40; Jn.19:25.)
3.
In fishing business with brother and father on Galilee ( Mk.1:19-20), also with Peter ( Lk.5:10) and brother Andrew. ( Mt.4:18)
4.
Owned a house in Jerusalem ( Jn.19:27) and known by the High Priest ( Jn.18:16), quite likely through business dealings (supplying fish), or as some suggest (Polycrates, bishop of Ephesus, A.D. 190), John was of the priestly order. Which ever the case, he gained admittance with Jesus when He was taken into the palace of Caiaphas. ( Jn.18:15)
5.
Likely was "other disciple" of the Baptist who followed Jesus at John's witness ( Jn.1:37) and inferred (being with Andrew going for Peter), notified his own brother, James, also. ( Jn.1:41)
6.
Officially called to full-time discipleship later (1 yr.?) Mt.4:21; set apart as an Apostle. ( Mt.10:1-2)
7.
Nicknamed by Jesus, "son of thunder" = Boanerges ( Mk.3:17); illustrated in character. ( Lk.9:54; Mk.9:38)
8.
Likely in attendance at miracle in Cana. ( Jn.2:2)
9.
Vied for position in Christ's kingdom. ( Mt.20:21; Lk.22:24)
10.
Present at Jesus' Transfiguration, with James and Peter. ( Lk.9:33)
11.
Likely the "beloved one" who leaned on Jesus' breast. ( Jn.13:23,25)
12.
Only one to remain with Jesus when taken captive. ( Jn.18:16)
13.
Only disciple recorded present at crucifixion. ( Jn.19:26)
14.
Given charge of Mary, Jesus' mother ( Jn.19:27), which tradition reports he faithfully obeyed until her death at his home in Jerusalem.
15.
Went to tomb ( Jn.20:2), and present with others at Jesus' Appearances ( Jn.20:19) and Ascension. ( Acts 1:10)
16.
Continues with disciples in Jerusalem ( Acts 1:13), and instrumental in the development of new Church; though mentioned by name, there are no recorded spoken words. Last seen in Acts 12:2.
17.
Credited with 5 N.T. books: Gospel of John, I, II, III John, and Revelation. Never mentioned by name in his gospel.
18.
Honored by Paul. ( Gal.2:9)
19.
[See notes on Ch.13, p. 164, and Gnosticism, pp. 41.]
20.
Tradition places him in Asia Minor in later years as Bishop of Ephesus. During persecutions, martyred in burning oil, emerging unscathed, forced to drink hemlock cup, with no effect, and finally exiled to Patmos Island to work in mines. There he received his Revelation ( Rev.1:9). Later declared free since his execution had been carried out, and returned to Ephesus where he ministered until his death of old age. Many heartwarming stories exist of his final years. He was consumed with the Lord's command to love others!
