John Chapter 7

II.
SCRIPTURAL STUDY.

C.
THE CROWD'S RESPONSE.   7:25-36
vs.25-26
1.
The First Group's Confusion. (The Group of 7:12c.)
vs.25

a.
It is public knowledge now of the Rulers' murderous intent.
vs.26a

b.
Jesus has finally come after 18 months, and now speaks openly as if to defy them intentionally.
vs.26b

c.
They at last have their long-awaited opportunity their hearts have desired, but they do not act; why, the crowd wonders?
vs.26c

d.
They are confused. Could it be that the rulers have changed their minds about Him and now have accepted Him as the Christ?
vs.27

e.
And so their commitment to Him awaits the disclosure of the Rulers' decision.

In this case, their faith would not be their own. This would be no faith at all, simply following the popular opinion of the day. Sound familiar?

TRUTH:
NEVER LOOK TO OTHERS AND WAIT FOR THEIR RESPONSE TO CHRIST BEFORE DECIDING FOR YOURSELF WHAT YOURS SHOULD BE.
21:19-22

For illustration, see Peter's confession to Christ upon hesitancy over John's position.
vs.28
3:2a
5:42-43

f.
Jesus responds by saying they have no excuse and need no other witness to believe for themselves. He is perturbed, to put it mildly! The Rulers already knew by His works from Ch.2 that He was sent from God (as seen in the confession of Nicodemus who was one of them). So in rejecting Him, they were, in fact, rejecting God, thus proving they did not know Him nor possess His Love.
vs.31
2.
The Second Group's Confession. (This Group of 7:12b.)
a.
It was simple. His works (miracles) were sufficient for faith.
b.
THEIR STATEMENT OF CONFESSION:
What more could another do if he were to come than this One has already done? He has healed the sick, fed the thousands, walked on water, cast out demons, and even raised the dead! We Believe!
5:33,36

c.
Just as we declare. They may not have believed the first witness of the Baptist, but they believed the second, which were His own miracles (a witness sufficient for faith for salvation, so said by Jesus to John).

d.
Study the 7-fold witnesses to Christ found in John's Gospel. Then compare how the different New Testament figures came to Him. At times, it will be only one witness, but for others, more will be required. Which did you come by?
(1)
The Witness of the Baptist, - 5:33
(2)
The Works of Jesus, - 5:36
(3)
The Testimony of the Father, - 5:37
(4)
The Witness of Scripture, - 5:39
(5)
The Witness of Jesus Himself, - 8:14
(6)
The Witness of the Holy Spirit, and finally, - 15:26
(7)
The Witness of All Believers. - 15:27
e.
Each one, or a combination of any, is sufficient to bring one into faith. These are avenues whereby one is led to the Door for entry into the Kingdom. One then says: "I receive the witness of..., thereby I believe." (Rom.10:8-10)
Use these when telling others about Jesus and see what happens.

TELL THEM OF:
(1)
The Testimony of John (The Lamb slain for their sin),
(2)
The Miracles of Jesus, (Ask the woman whose son He raised from the dead!)
(3)
The Father confirming Jesus, (Ask the crowd who heard His voice at the Jordan.)
(4)
The Scripture which is fulfilled in Him, (Read, read, read, it's all there to believe.)
(5)
The Life of Jesus -- how He suffered, died, and rose again, ascended and is returning to Earth someday for every believer,
(6)
The Holy Spirit who came with Power to live in the life of every believer, keeping him until Christ's return,
(7)
The Witnesses of the many disciples who saw Him alive and served Him with their very lives, holding to their faith even in death, then and now. (If only one died refusing to deny, one might doubt, but all?)
Acts 2:14-36
And finally tell them of your own experience: for it possesses the Power and validity as any previous to be used by the Holy Spirit in bringing one to Christ. Many plans have been devised by men, sometimes formulas and methods too cute for their own good, that are taught others for use in witnessing to someone about Christ. The above 7 witnesses are those authorized in Scripture that bring with them the verification and mysterious work of the Holy Spirit. It is the Biblical Plan, and that used by the early Church. See Peter's first witness following Pentecost as an example. So, when you find your own futile arguments failing, or see someone else foundering, just start telling them about Jesus; His Spirit will do the rest.

D.
THE CROWD DIVIDED.   7:37-43

Deu.18:15-22
1.
A piece of the puzzle of the Portrait of Christ lay in each of their hands but their blindness kept them from seeing and assimilating it for their own benefit. Some said He was the Prophet of Moses' prophecy, others said, the Christ.
vs.42
2.
All the evidence was before them to meet their understood requirements to believe but they could not see. In Him was personified all that was prophesied in the Old Testament, plus two final compelling conditions that glared here for recognition:
Mt.1:1

a.
He was of David, and
Mt.2:1

b.
He was born in Bethlehem.

TRUTH:
FOR THE SAFETY OF ONE'S SOUL, JESUS IS NOT TO BE DEBATED AMONG MEN IN OPEN FORUM, BUT PERSUADED IN PRIVATE BY ONE'S OWN INDIVIDUAL CONSCIENCE.

TRUTH:
HARDNESS OF HEART IS THE CARDINAL CONDITION THAT CAUSES AND REFLECTS THE BLINDNESS IN ONE'S SOUL.
vs.43

vs.44a
vs.44b
Eph.6:10-18
13:27
17:12
Ecc.7:20-22
Rom.7:11-25
3.
The crowd becomes divided and the chasm between the Council and Christ deepens. Has not this been Satan's age-old battle tactic first seen used to separate Eve from Adam, then Adam from God, etc., etc... Here we see it at work again, and his puppets snap at the moment to seize their prey. But, failing to recognize who some say He is, they underestimate His Power and Stealth. (Watch for this tactic in your own relationships. Recognize its source and deal with him, not the person with whom you are presently at odds. This is where the battle really exists. Once you do this, then victory is yours! Try it, won't you. All of us have someone [or ones] with whom this occurs. Sometimes, these are well-wishers who mean good but are constant thorns we can't seem to extract, no matter how hard we try. Stop seeing the person with whom you are engaged as the enemy. He or she is not! There is one behind them of which they know nothing about, and because humans respond to all attacks in the natural realm, Satan continues to use and is successful with this worn out method. He never changes -- why should He, when it works! This was the key to Christ' success. Study Jesus' words to Peter - Mt.16:22-23 & Lk.22:31. Fortunately for Peter, Satan was not successful and Peter and Jesus could not be separated. But unfortunately for Judas, he was successful, and you are aware of the end result of that divided relationship! Oh yes, don't forget in your hypersensitivity to others' shortcomings, that you aren't used yourself sometimes as agents against them. Hard to admit? No harder for you than it is for them, when neither can see its source. So, guard against both frontal and rear attacks!)

E.
THE COUNCIL'S FAILURE. (To Capture Christ)   7:44-53

1.
Unable to defeat Christ in a battle of words, the rulers will not concede defeat in their conspiracy. The failure in His arrest speaks volumes to the confusion and uncertainty that surrounded this Council's ill-conceived plan for His arrest and condemnation.
vs.44
10:18
Mt.26:53
2.
But Christ has succeeded in bringing them out into the open. Their strategy of secrecy they hoped to be to their advantage has vanished before them as equally as Christ has eluded His arrest (as on other occasions). It is not time. He will be heard to say later that no man can take Him unless He is willing, and for now, it is not the Father's Will.
vs.48
vs.50
3.
Unable to succeed in their intentions, and suspecting there are Council members who are traitors to their cause, they immediately turn on themselves to find fault in this failure. Nicodemus speaks to His defense (whether a believer yet it is not known -- if not, he soon will be).
vs.52

vs.46
4.
Their ire is provoked and their prejudice against Galileans surfaces; Jesus is condemned by them solely on the basis of adult residency. Consider all the previous signs (signs that the people were willing to accept, only most awaiting their Rulers' assent) these arrogant ones had to ignore in order to continue with their rejection of this miracle worker, one with whom even their guards were impressed.

vs.53
5.
It is clear now that these Rulers have chosen a path in which there will be no turning away from until they have achieved their desired goal. They have expended too much time, energy, and pride in their efforts to save face if they were to recant now. There will be no reasoning with them. Nicodemus is silenced, and likely because he is reminded of his own like origins, a little dejected. This may have been the catalyst that finally drove him to Jesus.
