John Chapter 15:1-16

I.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION.

A.
THE ANALOGY OF THE VINE.

1.
John has previously given us 7 witnesses to Jesus (Ch.7, p. 117), followed by 7 signs:
a.
Water to wine (2:9)
b.
Nobleman's son (4:50)
c.
Lame man healed (5:8)
d.
5,000 fed (6:10)
e.
Walking on water (6:19)
f.
Blind man healed (9:6)
g.
Lazarus raised (11:43)

2.
He now concludes His 7 great "I AM" sayings:
a.
I AM the BREAD OF LIFE (6:35)
b.
I AM the LIGHT OF THE WORLD (8:12)
c.
I AM the DOOR (10:7)
d.
I AM the GOOD SHEPHERD (10:11)
e.
I AM the RESURRECTION (11:25)
f.
I AM the WAY (14:6)
g.
I AM the TRUE VINE (15:1)
vs.1
3.
Here, John uses "TRUE" = alethinos, meaning, "the Real, sincere, veracious one."
Same as in the following, referring to:
a.
The "TRUE LIGHT" (1:9)
b.
The "TRUE BREAD" (6:32)
c.
The "ONLY TRUE GOD." (17:3)

Hos 10:1-2
4.
The previous vine (Israel) was only a type of the TRUE to come, failed in obedience and fruitfulness, later lamenting its loss. That failure is seen in their lack of obedience and abiding in their covenanted relationship with God -- and failure to love one another (Isa.5).
(Ps.80, Je.16:10-21, Je.22, 2:21)
3:2 6:68
7:31 9:16,32
10:10
5.
Now comes the True, rooted in the Father, obedient to His will, successful in His prayers, and fruitful in His labor; there can be no mistake. All the requirements are met in Him; all the conditions are seen in Him; and all the results are irrefutable in Him. No one has ever, or could ever, so fulfill those prerequisites. His authenticity must be accepted! Why then do any wait for another? He clearly came, not to destroy, but as a life-giver. He is the Vine wherein all life flows!

B.
CONTEXTUAL EVENTS.

1.
The time is approximately 9 p.m., Thursday evening, 15th Nisan (already their Jewish Friday).
13:30 18:3
14:31
2.
Jesus and the 11 remaining disciples (Judas having departed to return soon with the mob) remove from the upper room to Gethsemane. He has shocked them with the news of His imminent departure and personal predictions, shared some astonishing promises and assurances, and swept their hearts back from the brink of breaking. ( 13:33,38, 14:3,16, 14:1,28)

15:5
3.
More than these, He has revealed the key to His successful ministry (works): His Abiding Relationship with the Father. This was the Model He gave to them for their life in Him. No life, nor work, can survive outside Him. They must be under full authority of Him at all times (obeying His commandments) to: (14:10-11, I Co.3:12-15)
14:13

a.
HAVE THEIR PRAYERS ANSWERED BY HIM, and
14:16

b.
RECEIVE THE COMFORTER FROM HIM,

14:16
14:12,16
14:26

Who, when He comes, will:

Pointer Comfort them in Jesus' physical absence,
Pointer Empower them for continued service, and
Pointer Teach them in all things.

4.
This thesis, The Abiding Relationship, is the key to a fruitful life. It is now further explained in this Chapter. It is crucial they understand this for their future success in remaining (abiding) after He is gone. They cannot, must not, no, will not fail. Into their hands are given the keys to the Kingdom. History (Acts of the Apostles and other writings) will record their faithfulness unto the end, failing momentarily at times, but never again denying their Lord, persevering through many persecutions, to finally go the way He promised. He will come for each one at their own appointed time, and some day come again for all who look for His appearing ( Heb.9:28).
( Acts 5:40, 12:2, II Co.6:4-10)

Lk.12:1
11:48 12:43
5.
In Ch.15, He will reveal to them that all power in Heaven and Earth will be at their disposal through their abiding petitionary life in Him, as it was with Him for the mission He will leave with them. He will not assign them an impossible duty in human terms without imparting to them the same potential power of Heaven's Throne. To do so would be inconsistent with His Love for them, not to mention a cataclysmic injustice and abuse of His own power. Learn the Key to Abiding Power. Believe it! Embrace it! Act upon it! And hang on; it will get radical! Pride will be the first casualty, and then...Hypocrisy maybe? And who knows what would follow -- human control? Power of men? Oh well, one can dream, can't they?
15:16

TRUTH:
THE DUTIES WE DO IN DAILY SERVICE FOR HIM, IF NOT DONE IN HIS POWER (SPIRIT), ARE MERELY THE WORKS OF MAN AND WILL NOT REMAIN. THEY WILL BURN. (See Paul's comments on the vineyard, I Co.3:8-15.)
