John Chapter 15:1-16

II.
SCRIPTURAL STUDY.

A.
THE NECESSITY FOR ABIDING.   15:1-6
14:31 15:1
Mt.26:30,36

Isa.5

vs.1
1.
Passing out of the city through the Kidron Valley, Jesus journeys with His remaining disciples into Gethsemane, located at the base of Mt. Olivet on the eastern side of Jerusalem. Whether thinking of the wine at Supper, the Golden Vine over the Temple Gate, a passing vineyard enroute to prayer, or Old Testament scripture ever present in His mind, He speaks a very clear analogy of the vine to expound upon His thesis of the abiding relationship for sustained service in the Father's Kingdom (vineyard).
CHRIST = THE VINE; THE FATHER = THE VINEDRESSER.
"HUSBANDMAN" = georgos, meaning, "cultivator of the soil."
Used only here in John, implying more than just a worker, rather, the proprietor and overseer of all operations: from preparation, planting, and pruning, to harvesting.
vs.2
2.
Having identified Himself as the True Vine in His Father's Vineyard, Jesus now identifies 2 TYPES OF AUTHENTIC VINE BRANCHES:
vs.2a

a.
FRUITLESS BRANCHES:
These are authentic in Him, shown by:
(1)
Jesus' Word ("EVERY BRANCH IN ME"), and
(2)
The Vinedresser's Action ("HE TAKETH AWAY")
"TAKETH" = airo, meaning, "to lift, take up, away."
Same as in 17:15, Acts 1:9 & 8:33. See also: exairo in I Co.5:2.
Not exballo, meaning, "to cast out," as seen in Lk.10:35.
vs.2b

b.
FRUIT BEARING BRANCHES
These are Authentic In Him, shown by:
(1)
Jesus' Words ("EVERY BRANCH," IN HIM implied),
(2)
Evident Fruit ("THAT BEARETH FRUIT"), and
(3)
The Vinedresser's Own Action ("HE PURGETH IT").

II Co.5:17

Gal.4:22-23
Ep.4:30

II Ti.2:15,19-26

I Co.5
(key vs.5)

II Co.2:6-11
3.
Notice "IN ME" = en emoi, clearly stated by Christ, therefore, it cannot be idly ignored, semantically explained, nor arbitrarily set aside to fit one's own personal interpretations. Indicative of existing position: this one is In Him, and Paul says if "any man be In Christ he is a new creature, old things are passed away, all things are become new." However, bearing not fruit, He (God) takes away -- In Him but not producing fruit (of the Spirit) of an abiding relationship here spoken of with the Comforter (Spirit) whereby one is sealed IN HIM. Of no more earthly use, to be "TAKEN AWAY" by the Father. Prayerless, Powerless, Fruitless Christians, but Christians nonetheless. Do not confuse these authentic branches, as many do, with the pseudo-branches of vs.6 we will speak to later. I have seen fruit bearing trees with an aberrant branch, viable, strong, larger and healthier than all others, yet incapable of producing fruit, while other branches, more diminutive, not as vibrant in appearance, constantly producing numerous healthy fruit. The former branch I have seen removed, and all others becoming healthier and more productive. So it is in the Kingdom -- Authentic Branches incapable of fruit. One has to look only to the Corinthian Church to find such an example, one whose flesh is delivered over to Satan for destruction that the spirit may live unto Jesus. Notice, too, that Paul expresses his brotherly love and concern toward this errant one in his second letter to these Corinthians, thus clearly identifying him as an Authentic Christian. What a tragedy -- to stretch God's mercy to such a sad end in life! What a lesson for the Church in forgiveness!
vs.2b
4.
To abide produce more fruit. Purging -- trials, tribulations, testing, temptations, assures one of adversity, to the end one remains purified to persecutions, etc., are guaranteed to the Authentic Abiding Branch, also assuring one he or she is In Him - Js.1:2-3,12; 5:7-8.
(Ph.1:27-30) (I Pe.1:6-9,22,23, I Pe.2:17-20, Heb.5:5-10)

TRUTH:
PRODUCING FRUIT PREVENTS PERSONAL REMOVAL FROM ONE'S PLACE IN SERVICE.
vs.3
13:10
5.
Here, the purged (all clean), fruit bearing branches. Specifically the 11. Notice the method of purging -- His Word! See: Job 14:1,4; 15:14-16; Ps.119:9; II Tim.3:16-17; 2:15,19-26. Also, notice this teaching comes on the heels of Jesus' actions with Judas not many minutes earlier.
vs.4

Rev.2:4-5
6.
Opportunity to remain (abide) is for the express purpose of continual fruit-bearing. Cease bearing fruit and one is at risk of being "TAKEN AWAY" (lifted or taken up, not cutoff) after an unsuccessful period of purging for repentance. Know this lesson and warning to the 7 churches in Asia, as it was to Israel of old.

7.
How does one abide to bear fruit?
a.
Prayer,
b.
Bible Study,
c.
Worship,
d.
Witnessing, and
e.
Service to others.

I Jn.3:22-24
13:34
14:1

Feeding from His Table.

IN SHORT, IN OBEDIENCE TO HIS 2 COMMANDMENTS:
pointer    To love one another, and
pointer    To believe (keep on believing) on Him.
vs.5
8.
Christ will now define the Roles, Relationships, and Results of this Abiding Relationship:
vs.5a

a.
DEFINED ROLES.
(1)
Christ is the Vine.
(2)
These are Authentic Branches (fruit bearing).
vs.5b

I Jn.3:24

I Jn.3:24

b.
DEFINED RELATIONSHIPS.
(1)
The Branch is IN HIM.
(2)
The Vine is IN THE BRANCH.
vs.5c

c.
DEFINED RESULTS.
(1)
Answered Prayer (implied, see vs.7).
(2)
Much Fruit.
(3)
Continued abiding, with more pruning (implied, see vs.2).
Rom.11

Here is the true picture of a successful grafting, adoption, and cross-mixing of both Vine and Authentic Branch for:

pointerThe Life of the Branch to continue,
pointerThe Growth of the Branch to occur, and
pointerThe Fruit of the Branch to be produced.

The Vine provides for the Branch essential life-force elements to produce all 3. Clearly, then, the Branch is viable only when attached to the Vine. Fail to produce fruit and it will be removed.
vs.6

vs.2-5
9.
In this verse, we see a clear transition in Jesus' words from His address to His disciples, specifically in the use of His stated pronouns. He moves from the personal "YE" and "YOU," to the impersonal, "A MAN," "HE," "THEM," and "THEY" of vs.6, but immediately returns to the "YE" and "YOU," referring to the eleven again in vs.7 and following.

10.
"ABIDING NOT IN ME ... CAST FORTH AS A BRANCH."
"CAST" = ballo, "to cast." Same as in: Rev.20:15.
Notice here:
a.
One is not in Him (never has been, never will be).

Mt.7:21-23

b.
He only appears "as a branch." No where is it indicated, or implied, he was ever in Him! Quite the contrary, Christ says he was never in Him!
Lk.9:49-50

c.
He withers over time (not being rooted in the Vine). (Acts 5:35-39)
d.
Men take him away to be burned.

11.
Here, I see 2 TYPES OF PSUEDO-BRANCHES:

Mt.7:15-23
Lk.10:3

a.
ONE WHO IS CLEARLY NOT ATTACHED TO THE VINE.
Having only temporal life, never coming to the Vine for adoption (grafting in), who will in time wither and die, to be cast away for the burning. Taking to themselves the form of godliness, or outward appearance of a branch, but being void of the life on the inside, lacking the power thereof; therefore, no possibility of fruit! (The Pharisee. The Legalist. The great churchmen of any day!) (Acts 20:28-31a, II Ti.3:5)
6:14

6:66

II Ti.3:5b
II Jn.9-11

b.
ONE WHO IS AN APPARENT BRANCH, HAVING ASSIMILATED TO THE VINE.
Appears as a branch, but in time withers, loses life, not being firmly grafted (in faith) into the Vine, simply attached to, not firmly secured within, who will blow away in the winds of persecution and loss of interest, falling away on their own, to be gathered and burned.
Notice here neither of these is a TRUE branch by Jesus' own words:

pointerThey are not abiding in Him, and
pointerThey only appear as a Branch.

From such, Paul warns: Turn Away! And John cautions not even to entertain them in your homes.
