Now 3 days' journey from Mt. Sinai. Moses' prayer for God's divine favor.

Chosen elders filled with Spirit for service and prophesy, including two who remained in camp, later identified. Joshua seeks their censure, but Moses desires everyone to be filled. Miracle of quail. People demonstrate their greed in gathering. God displeased, smites them with a plague. Guilty buried at Kibroth-hattaavah. Move to Hazeroth.

Provoked by Moses' marriage to Ethiopian woman, Miriam and Aaron's jealousy emerges. Miriam stricken with leprosy-like disease. Spends 7 days outside camp for atonement &cleansing. People move from Hazeroth to wilderness of Paran.

Now at entry of promised land, 12 spies sent into Canaan. Mission to report on 3 areas: (1) if people are strong or weak; (2) if land is good or bad; and (3) if cities are tents or strongholds. To bring back examples of fruit of the land. Spies report after 40 days. Ten give negative, two positive: Joshua and Caleb.

Major murmuring. Joshua's reply. God moved to destroy all and start over with Moses alone. Moses intercedes. (Now 10th tempting of God.) God's decision: NO PROMISED LAND for 40 yrs. And NO MALES age 20 and up to enter. ALL to die out during next time in the wilderness to which they are sentenced. 10 spies die now during plagues. People mourn. Agree to go forward. Too late! Some go anyway. Moses warns them God won't be with them. They are destroyed in battle.

Law of offerings for postponed entry into promised land. Two guilty of gathering sticks on Sabbath made an example; stoned. Fringe to be sewn on garments as a reminder to keep Sabbath. (A symbol of the Covenant: "Tallit with tzitzi," or tassels.)

(1471 B.C.?) Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and On (grandchildren of Levi and Reuben), with 250 famous princes envying their position and desiring to participate in leadership, rebel against Moses and Aaron. Put to test. Test failed. Earth swallows them and their households. Fire consumes the 250 princes. Major murmuring. Moses unable to restrain God before He destroys 14,700. Aaron comes between God and the living and dead with a censer of fire from the Altar, staying the plague of death.

Finally goes with understanding of messengers and agreement with God. Three angelic appearances to Balaam's beast of burden. Beast speaks to Balaam. Angel appears with warning to Balaam. Balaam arrives, and with Balak, goes up to high places of Baal, overlooking Israelite camp.
