Shocking Decline In Major Doctrinal Beliefs Among Senior Church Pastors
ADAM2.ORG - Updated September 10, 2022 — A recent Barna poll revealed several shocking and disturbing trends among senior church pastors. There was a time in my lifetime when a search committee took for granted the doctrinal beliefs of a prospective new senior pastor. I can speak personally to this. In all the churches I have served, not one question concerning my doctrinal beliefs was ever asked of me. I see two main reasons for this. First, by and large, the vast majority of pastors in the pulpit had a working knowledge of the major doctrinal teachings of their particular denomination, even if search committee members did not. Hence, the second cause for this failure in questioning: the majority of church members failed to possess a sound biblical view of those established doctrines themselves. Here we are in the 2nd decade of the 21st century so far removed from those historic revivals of the gospel of the 17th, 18th, 19th and early 20th century that led not only to the ingathering of millions of souls to the church but the establishment of denominational views of biblical doctrine. Having entered what some are calling a "post-modern world" church has been successfully redefined by a new breed of "post-modern" senior leaders as a worldly magnet which holds to "whatever means necessary" in drawing new attendees to their highly scripted performances on Sunday. With the emphasis centered around the … to these Sunday attractions rather than corporate worship of the saints and the preaching and teaching of sound biblical doctrine is it any wonder we now have men, and women, and homosexuals, and transgenders, and non-binary, et.al, filling a large percentage of pulpits who no longer hold to long established sound biblical doctrine? Here are just a few of Barna's findings:
...substantial proportions of senior pastors do not believe what the Bible teaches related to some fundamental perspectives. For instance, large minorities of senior pastors are in conflict with the Bible on a range of teachings: One-third or more of senior pastors believe:
  • Sexual relations between two unmarried people who believe they love each other is morally acceptable.
  • Determining moral truth is up to each individual; there are no moral absolutes that apply to everyone, all the time.
  • The Holy Spirit is not a living entity but is a symbol of God's power, presence, or purity.
  • Having faith matters more than which faith you have.
  • Reincarnation is a real possibility.
  • It is possible to reach complete spiritual maturity during our time on earth.
  • A person who is generally good, or does enough good things for others, can earn a place in Heaven.
  • They are willing to try just about anything once.
  • Socialism is preferable to capitalism.
  • Allowing property ownership facilitates economic injustice.
  • The Bible is ambiguous in its teaching about abortion, enabling you to make a strong argument either for or against abortion based on biblical principles.
One-third or more of senior pastors do not believe:
  • Human life is sacred.
  • Wealth is entrusted to individuals to be managed for God's purposes.
  • Success is consistent obedience to God.
  • People are born into sin and can only be saved from its consequences by Jesus Christ.
  • They, personally, will experience eternal salvation only because they have personally confessed their sins and accepted Jesus Christ as their savior.
