ADAM2.ORG - March 30, 2022 — Putting aside the Elvis argument in the 50's, when we look at the battle the church has had against the pop-culture in each generation there are two major events that arguably can be defined as the lynch-pins of successive defeats.
The first were the two Supreme Court cases of Engel v. Vitale (1962) and Murray v. Curlett (1963) which ruled Bible reading and prayer to be unconstitutional in public schools. These are often referred to as the point when "God was kicked out" of America's public education. It is spoken of as the defining moment when the battle for the heart and soul of the children was lost.On the heels of this monumental defeat, the second event is traced to the struggle the church had with Disney during the 1970's over their prime-time 6pm Sunday night choice for air time. This struck at the heart of the spiritual life of both the church and its congregants. This also was seen as the second wedge being driven by the culture between the children and their parents, and by extension, the church.Church attendance was arguably the central influence to the moral health of America's communities. Church was about more than worship. It was where business leaders networked, parents received spiritual reenforcement for their children's civil behavior and a social spiritual bond was created among the community at large. We knew our neighbors and, for the most part, practiced "The Golden Rule." Crime was in check and vice was something isolated and frowned upon by any "decent" citizen.Disney's decision was intransigent. Talks were held between Disney and church leaders but Disney was embolden in this cultural choice. The new "Wonderful World Of Disney" exploded into the consciousness of America. Sunday night worship declined. Disney and the children had defeated the church!
