(520 B.C.?) [See Ezra 4:24; 5:1. After enemy interference, Temple construction had ceased for 15 years, with little or no interest in reviving it. Haggai is called to bring that revival.] In the 2nd year of Darius, king of Persia, Haggai is called to deliver a message to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, and Joshua, the high priest. The people have built their own houses while God's house has languished in shameful waste. Their land and personal prosperity suffered, with no consideration of the cause: God withheld His increase from their personal lives. They are now to consider their ways. All things are of God's hands. Man's work without God's increase is vanity. The laws of His cursings and blessings are seen still in effect for obedience (Deu.27 & 28). They are stunned into fearful submission! Zerubbabel's spirit is stirred, the priests', and finally the remnant of the people. All respond to the renewal of rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem, with work beginning within the month, on the 24th day, 6th month, and 2nd year of Darius' reign.

[One Month Passes From 1:15 to 2:1. Three Messages Follow In Chapter 2.]
(1)
2:1-9
=
TO ALL, LEADERS AND PEOPLE ALIKE.
Message of the House of God. Calls to their remembrance the former Temple and its greater glory, destroyed in 586 B.C. by Babylon. [See Ezra 3:12 for similar response 15 years earlier.] Reminds them that His Covenant and its related promises made to their fathers leaving the captivity of Egypt is still in effect, so be strong! He is still with them and if He be with them, who can stand against them? His Glory and strength have not diminished! He will shake the nations and fill the Temple with His Glory once again, greater than before. Peace will come and all the Earth's nations will seek Him.
(2)
2:10:19
=
TO THE PRIESTS. (Two Months Later)
Message of the unclean. God alone makes the unclean clean. The previous offerings of the people from their meager gatherings were contaminated with the sins of their neglect of Him. Now, if all consider Him, their labor and offerings will be blessed from this time forward. (It was winter and the time for planting was at hand.)
(3)
2:20-23
=
TO ZERUBBABEL, THE GOVERNOR. (At The Same Time.)
Message of Encouragement. God's favor is upon him. He will be His strength in standing before all nations. His chosen is a signet of Him in all the Earth. Rejoice, O Israel, for the Mighty One reigns forever!
