Ex.17:9,14
1.
(1491 B.C.?) Chosen by Moses for military leadership in the early days of the Exodus. (Battle against Amalekites.)
24:13
2.
Now as his minister, goes with Moses into Mt. Sinai to receive the Decalogue etched in stones by God.
32:17
3.
After 40 days and nights, descends Mt. Sinai with Moses to hear what he thought was the cry of battle, but, in fact, was the revelry of his people in rebellion.
33:11
4.
Present in Tabernacle with Moses when Moses speaks face to face with God. Remains there after Moses departs. One is left to wonder what transpired in this delayed encounter with God? "Servant" in 33:11 is the same Hebrew word for "minister" in 24:13 = sharath, which means, "to minister or serve."
Nu.11:28
5.
(1490 B.C.?) Not yet mature in wisdom and understanding. Zealous in loyalty to Moses and his authority. Perceived it being challenged.
13:8,16
6.
Chosen by Moses as 1 of 12 princes to spy out Promised Land.
14:6-7
7.
Along with Caleb, was distraught at the other 10 spies' report, and attempted to dissuade the people.
14:10
8.
The congregation responded by calling for their lives, but God intervened.
14:30,38
(32:12)
9.
With Caleb, and because of their report and response to the others, was the only two of that generation allowed to enter the Promised Land. (Over age 20)
26:65
10.
(1452 B.C.?) Now, almost 40 yrs. later, Joshua and Caleb are the only two remaining of previous generation (besides Moses). (Numbered in this counting over age 20 who were not numbered in the inaugural count.)
27:15-23
11.
Chosen by God and anointed by Moses before Israel to be his successor.
32:28
12.
Instructed by Moses to fulfill promise to Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh for their inheritance after all land taken.
34:17
13.
Chosen by God with Eleazer (high priest, son of Aaron) to divide the inheritance of the 12 tribes.
Deu.1:38
14.
(1451 B.C.?) Moses now calls for Israel's encouragement to Joshua.
3:21-22
15.
Moses recalls for Joshua's encouragement how God gave him witness of His presence in previous battle.
31:3
16.
Now at the point of assuming command, Moses recapitulates God's orders for his succession, recalling for both Joshua and the congregation's benefit God's witness to Joshua of His earlier sign of approval, 3:21-22 -- the defeat of 2 kings.
31:7-8
17.
Encouraged by Moses, reminded of God's promise of His abiding presence.
32:14,23
18.
Called with Moses by God for final conference of the 3 in the Tabernacle. A charge to both. ("Strong" is chazaq in Hebrew meaning: to be, or to become. "Courage" = amats, which means: confirmed, confident, to be strong, hard. Joshua is not now fully, but will become, strong, confirmed. Hence, the need for God's, Moses', and the congregation's encouragement.)
32:44
19.
With Moses, speaks Moses' Song to Israel.
34:9
20.
Now full of the spirit of wisdom and mature in understanding, Joshua is finally prepared to assume leadership.
