As hard drives grow larger by the gigabyte and real and virtual memory run
off the chart, programmers become lazier and lazier. Therefore, in new
programs or versions, better, most often, is sacrificed for bigger, and
typically slower.
In the beginning, hard drive space and memory were at a premium and programmers were forced to be more disciplined for critical conservation of the end-user's resources. Hence, programs were designed small and tweaked for optimum performance without compromising this paramount factor. As one learns from experiences in life, sometimes newer is not always better. While we try to keep you abreast of the newest software available for your PC, it is always recommended never to trash your old version when upgrading until you're satisfied that it outperforms its predecessor — a lesson we all, most likely, have learned the hard way. With available software at epidemic proportions, those recommended on the following pages are carefully chosen through collective experiences to represent our philosophy.
