SCRIPTURAL STUDY.

C.
THE ASSIGNMENT OF THE SPIRIT.   16:1-15
16:1-4
16:5-6
1.
After forewarning His disciples of the hatred to come, its effect on their lives (vs.2), and the reason for it (vs.3), Jesus turns His attention once again to their dismay of His departure and their lack of rejoicing in His promise of the Comforter and the Power He will give them.

TRUTH:
NO GREATER JOY IN LIFE, THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN, CAN COME TO ONE THAN BE CHOSEN A FRIEND BY JESUS AND CALLED INTO SERVICE IN HIS WORK, NO MATTER WHAT THE ASSIGNMENT!

They will come to know this in time, and then their joy will not be contained. (Col.1:10-13)

2.
Here, He speaks one of the richest passages of the work of the Holy Spirit in all the New Testament. It should be strongly noted again, as in the above background information, the Holy Spirit is a real person, only in Spirit, unseen by the natural eye, a Supernatural presence of the Third Person of the Trinity. The personal pronoun "HE," or "HIM," is used 12 times in this passage and in the strict masculine sense, never neuter. He is not an "IT", and never to be referred to as such. If you have difficulty grasping this, think of your real self within your aging and changing body. Would you diminish if you were to loose one, two, or all of your extremities, or other non-life threatening parts of your body? No. This is the fact desired known by those very ones who have! It is not what you see that is the living force that makes that body appear alive; it is your spirit within, that part of you, you wish to be seen, known, and appreciated by: your emotions, your intellect, your will. Is this not so? These are your personality -- what constitutes you as a person. It is no less for the Holy Spirit, who, because of His eternal nature and power, needs no earthly form for action, mobility, and transmission, except as He chooses through the life of the believer.
11:39
3.
As Jesus waited for Lazarus to be dead 4 days before raising him from the grave to give unquestionable evidence from the Father and identification with Him, we see Him here establishing a clear and final test of our knowing His Divine Origin and Destination: the Holy Spirit will wait to come as Jesus waited to go to Lazarus. Study this analogy thoroughly for its many hidden comparative Truths. The lesson in His delay, then, is directly applicable in His current teaching. So, just as His waiting to go to that Bethany family for many of the same reasons (list them for yourself, e.g., refute all arguments against His validity, produce genuine faith, etc.), when the moment in God's time is right, and men's hearts are established,

He will come on schedule to:
15:26

a.
Bear witness to Jesus' word,
16:7

b.
Bring aid and comfort to the expectant,
16:8-9

c.
Reprove the world of sin,
16:8,10

d.
Reprove the world of righteousness, and
16:8,11

e.
Reprove the world of judgment.
16:9
3:18,36
4.
The seed of all sin is the Sin of unbelief. It is in this Sin all stand condemned already, and through each's own failure to believe, will sentence themselves to eternal damnation; to align not with Jesus is to be eternally separated from the Father.
16:10

Lk.2:14
5.
Man's own righteousness will never be sufficient to attain eternal life and access to the Father, much less attain utopia here on Earth through his own advances and achievements. It is lacking even in making a world here fit for humans to live within. Witness the collapse of all heretofore world systems and governments. All the systems man may devise, be they governments (laws), education (knowledge), social welfare (benevolence), or whatever, will and are failing drastically. All is at best but a mere shell of the True, visibly crumbling because of the degenerate condition of the unregenerate man who makes it up. Only when man has experienced that regenerated inward change can any external system he produces and lives within be successful in service to man, producing peace and harmony among all, as Christ intended. So the peace Washington (or the world) offers is but hollow and cannot still man's troubled soul, nor solve his myriad of social ills. Only that which Jesus offers through the indwelling of His Comforter can bring satisfaction to all our longing; and His righteousness will prevail, producing a world full of justice: God to man, man to man, and peace to everyone! This is the message and meaning of the angels' enunciation at His birth.
16:11

Mt.12:29
6.
However, because this does not happen as it should, He will judge this world of its unrighteousness (man to God) and injustices (man to man), placing His foot upon the neck of its evil dictator as He steps upon the Cross to release those Satan has long held hostage. Satan, who rose up against man in the Garden, causing man to be set over against God (unrighteous) and his own fellow man (unjust) throughout the ages, will now be arrested at Golgotha. The Chosen One has at last come to bind the old householder.
16:12-17
7.
Jesus has told them all they can possibly bear for now. He will reserve further information until they have had time to assimilate and test that which He has already taught them. The Holy Spirit will be their sufficient Instructor. He will bring all the Chosen of Christ into Him, instructing them in the things of Him and rendering all Glory unto Him.
1:16 Ro.12:6
8.
And so, our Lord knows how to add "grace upon grace."
