John Chapter 12

II.
SCRIPTURAL STUDY.

E.
THE PRIDE AND PERIL OF THE RULERS.   12:37-43

1.
"CHIEF RULERS" (2 types)
Lk.8:44

a.
Officers of the synagogue (likely not this group.
3:1

b.
Members of the Sanhedrin (as Nicodemus), made up of both priests and laymen.
vs.43
2.
Their PRIDE is revealed in their love of praise from men. (Same group from 5:44.)
vs.42
3.
Their PERIL is revealed in their incomplete faith. (Failing to confess Jesus as Lord.)

TRUTH:
IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO BELIEVE HE IS THE CHRIST (THE DEMONS BELIEVE AND TREMBLE, Js.2:19), BUT ONE MUST CONFESS HIM AS LORD WITH THEIR MOUTHS AFTER RECEIVING HIM INTO THEIR HEARTS AND LIVES.
Ro 10:9-10
Mt.10:32-33
19:40
Lk.9:26
4.
Public confession is required before all, so stated by Jesus Himself. Because of their pride, this these hypocrites were unwilling to do. There can be no such thing as secret discipleship. Even Nicodemus finally left the cover of night and openly assisted Jesus from the Cross to the tomb. No less is required today. After what He publicly suffered for us without resisting, He is worthy of our public allegiance! Who will call Him King today, in the home, the market, or the work place? Would that all had the courage and devotion of a Mary! For her, nothing was too good to reserve from her Lord; to her, no amount of shame He would suffer could suppress her love for Him. Today, we serve a risen and Triumphant Savior, yet I am given to wonder if we stood before His Cross, unknowing as they of the outcome, what then would our commitment be? Mary saw it before the others, yet she spent her richest treasures upon His soon to be desecrated body. It is easy now for us in our modern world to sit in our safe pews and sing on Sundays, "O how I love Jesus," but the true test comes on Monday when confronting an antagonistic world to Christ. How often we shrink in cowered silence, as Peter, afraid and ashamed to admit our knowledge of and association with Jesus -- and our song of yesterday is soon forgotten!
It is time for the redeemed of the Lord to say so. (Ps.107)
III.
CONCLUDING COMMENTS.

A.
Again John has contrasted the two categories of people and their response to the Light, using the Devotion of Mary and the Denial of the Pharisees respectively. While one is drawn closer to the cross and His saving grace, the other grows harder and more distant, eventually to be eternally separated into outer darkness (one of life's greatest mysteries). ( Mt.8:12; 22:13-14; II Pe.2:17; Rev.21:7-8)

B.
Jesus will turn next to His closest companions in these final hours. There is much He has yet to tell them to prepare them for the unique days ahead. He will teach them the meaning of humility and service as stated in 12:25-26; for this is the Kingdom of God.
