JESUS' HEARTFELT REQUEST.   17:14-23

I Pe.2:1-3

Gal.5:19-21
Gal.5:22-26

Jn.3:20

3:19-21
1.
Jesus now tells us why the world hates His disciples: it is because He has chosen them out of the world and imparted unto them knowledge of the Father. Now seeing the world from a Heavenly perspective, they are becoming unique, no longer attracted to the systems of this world and its pyramids of traditions which leave man hollow in his own religious practices and daily lives. They have tasted the "WORD" as the prophet and Psalmist, finding it to be sweet also, and like a baby takes to candy, will not be denied, nor return hence. Listen to Peter as he writes to encourage others years later: "Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious." The fruit of the world (works of the flesh) is now giving way in the disciple's life to the fruit of the Spirit. Love is replacing hatred; Joy, pleasure; Peace, strife; Long-suffering, wrath; Gentleness, murders; Goodness, witchcraft; Faith, idolatry; Meekness, envyings; and Temperance, drunkenness. (Compare: Jn.15:16; Gal.5:16-26; Ep.2; I Pe.1:13-16,22-24; 2:1-3.)

It is this chosen life and subsequential fruit that has exposed them as aliens within their own world to be hated. They are becoming different, and because the world refuses to see and accept the Truth, it refuses to change; therefore, when these two antithetical worlds collide, violence will erupt. Evil and its fruit of hate will rise up against goodness. Darkness will attempt to conquer Light. Witness in our world today evil's hate and its attack upon all that is good in our society -- Abortionists against infant life; Homosexuals against sexual purity and procreation;
Euthanasiaists as suicide merchants; adinfinitum. See the pattern here? -- The dead hate the living! It's all about denying life, and Satan is the Orchestrator behind this ancient single plot; his fingerprints all over it -- has been from the beginning, will be until the end.
(See above teaching on 1:5 & 3:19-21, Chs. 1 & 3.)
vs.15
2.
So it now follows that Jesus would pray the Father to keep His chosen ones, not only from "EVIL" = poneros, meaning, that which is evil, used also in Mt.12:35 in connection with a person; in Mk.7:23 with things; and II Jn.11 with deeds, but implying all the above:
Mt.12:35

a.
Satan and an evil one of this world,
Mk.7:23

b.
The things of this world produced for evil intent,
II Jn.11

c.
The deeds done by man in this world for evil purposes.
Christ leaves no stone unturned when it comes to praying for the protection of His Friends! As in all things, He is eternally thorough, the inextinguishable Light. ( 1:5)
vs.16
3.
Here repeated from vs.14 for emphasis. We are not of this world therefore no longer:
II Co.5:17

a.
Citizens of this world,
II Ti.2:4

b.
Concerned with the things of this world,
Ro.12:2

c.
Conformed to the images of this world, nor
Ep.2:3

d.
Conscripted to the power of this world.
Ephesians 2 is rich in context here. The page does not permit further discussion, but study it in context; key vs.19. (Heb.11:13-16)
vs.17-19
15:3 17:18
17:19 17:3
4.
"SANCTIFIED" = hagiason, meaning, to cleanse and set apart. His Word is like fuller's soap, washing even the soul stained with sin to make pure a vessel fit for a temple for His Holy Spirit, set apart to be sent as salt into the Earth, sanctifying all with whom contact is made. As Dr. John Ker once said: "Men who are spiritually healthy, holy, will be best fitted to resist spiritual disease, and be able to go about as spiritual healers among men" (Scott, p.481). Earlier chosen as a disciple, each will be sent forth as an apostle in the manner of Jesus' own sanctification and apostolic mission. ( Heb.3:1, Ps.119:9, Ep.5:26, II Co.6:16-18)
vs.6-13

vs.20-23
5.
His entire mission to Earth, and now prayer to the Father, is consumed with His care for those chosen by Him. As the sparrow, none escapes His eye. He now prays for all believers, to the end that the world will know He was sent of God. This is the verification of Jesus' word to the world that He was from the Father: the evidence in the life of the believer. This, His Glory in them from vs.10. Think on this. With all our faults and shortcomings, Jesus makes it known that we are still His source of Glory in the world! This should bring great joy to one's heart, yet bow the soul in humble adoration and appreciation.

C.
JESUS' FINAL DESIRE.   17:24-26
vs.24

Ps.37:4
1.
Jesus' promise to His disciples of 14:1-4 now officially requested of the Father. He knows He will not be denied because of the Father's love for Him and their abiding relationship, which will prompt the Father to give Jesus the desire of His own heart: the same promise to any disciple in this abiding relationship. The reason for His desire: to share with those He loves that which He cherishes -- His Glory in Heaven. Can we not all relate to this in our own showing and sharing something so dear and familiar to us that speaks volumes about our past lives to newly made friends? Compare your desire to His in the hope and expectancy of His and your new friends accepting His and your invitations to come. Remember your excitement in that moment of their arrival to your home on their first visit? Now try to imagine His when you arrive there! I think you get the picture here. Think on these thoughts for a moment and how personal your relationship is with Him.
vs.25-26

26b
2.
Jesus was faithful while in the world to reveal the heretofore unknown Father, His nature, and redemptive plan for everyone, but is efficacious only in those who will receive Him. Through the forthcoming ministry of the Holy Spirit working through the remaining disciples, He will continue to reveal Him to everyone in each generation. His love is limitless, still free-flowing, and freely available to any today who will receive it.
