Article on Modern Church
The Modern Church
Has church been getting you down lately? Do you have more questions than answers about the major shift in your experiences in worship, in the objects, music, and even the sermons? We may be able to help.
First, know you are not alone! More people are awaking to a deceptive practice that began years ago. In response, we have put together 5 articles to try and answer some of those questions and help with your understanding. The first are more practical in nature as they relate to your questions. However, the 5th is more specific in identifying a major factor behind the changes you are experiencing. We hope this will not be the end of your exploration of this growing cancer on the church. If you're fine with it, we wish you the best but some of us have not nor will buy into it.
You may print and disseminate in whole or part but without modification and citing their original source.

This is the first in a series of 5 articles addressing the changes in worship and other areas of church life regardless of its age or size. Without delving into the background of this phenomenon just yet, we will get right to your questions, questions, as you shall see, indicating you are not alone in having. I know these questions are quite disturbing to you, as they should be, and are to us as well. Please take your time as you read through the articles and we recommend reading them in the order given. Each article is based on questions that began to emerge from my preparation of this series. In the fourth and especially the fifth and final article, we will try and lay out more specifically some things behind your questions and give some implications we see where this might be headed. Thank you for taking the time to consider this and we pray you will find at least in part some understanding that evades you just now, and that God will give you a peace about what you are experiencing.

The following is the second article to date addressing the changes being seen with alarming detail in modern churches. It is more practical in nature in response to this common dilemma occurring in more and more churches today. The members of these churches are being forced to choose whether to submit to obvious changes over which they have no control or say or look for another path that will be consistent with their beliefs and practices in their Christian walk and worship. The article's focus will sometimes shift from speaking to the opening question being asked to addressing those causing it to be asked—namely, their church leaders. I trust the reader's own wisdom to discern those pivot points for their intended purpose. Thank you for understanding. Please know these thoughts were not written without much prayer and consideration. I, too, am alarmed by these questions being asked about the fundamental changes occurring on a broad scale that spans denominational ties.

In the above Biblical examples both the Hebrews and the nominal disciples of Jesus were dependent upon their most recent experiences with God for their continued loyalty to Him. Absent those miracles they all murmured and decided they could no longer bear His leadership. They were addicted to their expectant experiences rather than dependent upon God. hey could not see past their human and emotional needs to be disciplined to walk by faith and not by sight. He would not concede to their demands. He would not appeal to their emotions. He sought to elicit their obedience by faith, a faith beyond sight. Short of that, He would force no one against their will to follow nor would He continue to entice them with His miracles (Lk.11:16). His compassion knew no limits but He would not alter His teaching or rhetoric to placate their consciences to maintain their following. His call was always prefaced with an IF—IF you will be my disciple, IF you would seek eternal life, etc (Mt.16:24; 19:21; Lk.14:26).

The following is the fourth article to date addressing the changes being seen with alarming detail in modern churches. As with the previous, it is more practical in nature in response to this common dilemma occurring in more and more churches today. The upcoming fifth and final article will deal more with specific facts and provide information as to what is behind this movement of the megachurch, or, what is called by them: the new emerging or emergent church. Another term you hear alternately is the seeker church, or, seeker friendly church. Having looked at some symptoms and tell-tale signs of a new manifesto being introduced within a growing number of churches spanning across denominational lines, we turn now to more practical matters in general for application. Although not intended, what follows will be controversial. But many who read will find in these words a common thread of what is already being sensed within their own hearts. All I ask is that the reader be open minded and, if haven't already, begin their own search, study and examination of this topic.

This is the fifth and intended final of five articles dealing with today's emerging church. Because the information is rather lengthy, it is broken down into two parts, Part I, laying the foundation for two fundamental questions, and Part II, responding to those questions. Hopefully, in these five articles there is enough information, first, to awaken those who haven't been stirred by the changes within their church, and second, to provide an adequate beginning into the individual's own search in their personal education on this subject. There are too many names and branches of this movement to list them all here but one should be able to discover them through the many references listed. Don't mistake this movement of the changing or emerging church for a trend. It is here. It is powerful! It is redefining to the world a new philosophy and breed of Christianity. We didn't ask for it. We weren't considered before it stretched its tentacles to touch us in our worship on Sundays. We were not invited into the debate before pastors who were began forcing it upon their congregations. But is not going away
